Our Message to you

A heartfelt welcome to you from all of us at the Emmanuel!

We are delighted to introduce you to our new spiritual home, a place founded on the timeless and renewed teachings of Jesus Christ. At the heart of our society is the Master's profound commandment found in John 13:35: "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” This divine instruction to love is the beacon that guides us every day at Emmanuel, as we strive to live and understand the Christian message through the enlightening and compassionate lens of Spiritism. Our mission is to provide a Christian Spiritist experience that promotes "spirituality with feeling, charity, love for neighbor, and intellectual-moral progress through the development of reasoned faith."

At Emmanuel, we deeply value the creation of vibrant communities where the collective strength is used to help and care for one another. We believe that, just as the early Christians gathered in fellowship and mutual support, we too can build a nurturing environment where every individual feels a sense of belonging and can flourish. We aim to foster true fraternity and support each other in all stages of life.

We warmly invite you to be part of this growing family. Come and join us as we journey together in spiritual growth, seeking to deepen our understanding and practice of Christ's teachings. Let us explore together the path to inner peace and moral development.

Together, let us seek that inner temple and build a community rooted in love, wisdom, and service. We look forward to welcoming you at Emmanuel.

About Spiritism

What is Spiritism?

Spiritism, also known as the Spiritist Doctrine, is a fairly new christian denomination that also is a science, a philosophy, and a moral doctrine. It is a body of principles and laws revealed by Superior Spirits, collected and organized by the French educator Hippolyte Léon Denizard Rivail, known under the pseudonym Allan Kardec, in the 19th century.

It emphasizes the profound connection to Christian teachings. Spiritism sees itself as a continuation of Jesus's message, fulfilling His promise to send "the Comforter" (John 14:16-17, 26) to further teach and clarify truths that humanity was not yet ready to receive. The Spiritism reveals the divine laws in a rational and spiritual manner, aligning with the purest expression of the Lord's law taught by Jesus himself.

Allan Kardec, in the introduction to "What is Spiritism?" (1859), defined it as: "Spiritism is a science that deals with the nature, origin, and destiny of spirits, and their relation with the corporeal world."

A Brief History of Spiritism

The formal codification of Spiritism began in France in the mid-1850s. Allan Kardec, a respected educator and scholar, was initially skeptical of the "turning tables" phenomena popular at the time. However, through meticulous observation, investigation, and communication with various spirits through different mediums, he became convinced of the reality of the spirit world and the coherence of the messages received.

Kardec did not invent a new system of thought; rather, he methodically compiled, analyzed, and synthesized the teachings provided by the Superior Spirits.

Spiritism quickly spread from France to other parts of Europe, the Americas, and beyond. It found particularly fertile ground in Brazil, where it has become a significant religious and social movement, known for its charitable institutions and study centers.

Spiritism a Christian Doctrine

At the heart of Spiritism lies the figure and teachings of Jesus Christ. Spiritism does not see itself as a new religion that supplants Christianity, but rather as the "Consoler" promised by Jesus, the Holy Spirit (John 14:16-17, 26), which has come in its time to recall and complete His teachings, making them understandable to all.

Allan Kardec, in The Gospel According to Spiritism, states:

"For humankind, Jesus constitutes the type of moral perfection that Humanity can aspire to on Earth. God offers him to us as the most perfect model, and the doctrine he taught is the purest expression of the Lord's law because, being the most spiritually pure of all those who have appeared on Earth, he was animated by the Divine Spirit." (Perspective of Spiritism on Jesus - Wikipedia, quoting Kardec)

Spiritism considers Jesus not merely as a historical figure but as a Guide and Model for all humanity. His Gospel is seen as the most perfect code of morality. The core of Spiritist morality is, therefore, the morality of Jesus. This includes:

  • Love of God above all things and love of neighbor as oneself: This is the supreme law. As Jesus taught, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 22:37-40, NKJV).
  • Charity: This is understood in its broadest sense benevolence towards all, indulgence for the imperfections of others, and forgiveness of offenses. Kardec famously established the maxim: "Outside of charity, there is no salvation." This echoes Jesus's words: "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven." (Matthew 7:21, NKJV). Doing God's will, in the Spiritist understanding, is the practice of charity and love.
  • Humility: Recognizing our own imperfections and the need for continuous self-improvement.
  • Forgiveness: As taught by Jesus in the Lord's Prayer and exemplified throughout his ministry.
  • The Golden Rule: "Therefore, whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 7:12, NKJV).

Spiritism aims to make these moral teachings practical and rational. By explaining the laws of cause and effect (karma) through reincarnation, it shows that our actions have consequences that reverberate through our multiple existences, thus underscoring the profound justice and goodness of God and the importance of living a moral life.

In "The Gospel According to Spiritism," Kardec also highlights Jesus's promise: "If you love Me, keep My commandments. And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper [Consoler], that He may abide with you forever- the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you... These things I have spoken to you while being present with you. But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." (John 14:15-17, 25-26, NKJV). Spiritists understand that Spiritism itself, as the revelation by the Spirits of Truth, fulfills this prophecy, offering a deeper understanding of Jesus's words and the laws that govern life.

Furthermore, the concepts of reincarnation and spirit communication, central to Spiritist understanding, are not entirely alien to the broader Judeo-Christian heritage.

  • Reincarnation: While not a dogma in mainstream contemporary Christianity, the idea of the soul's pre-existence and return has appeared in various forms throughout history. Some early Church Fathers and certain Gnostic Christian groups explored concepts akin to reincarnation. Within Judaism, the Kabbalistic tradition explicitly teaches gilgul neshamot (the transmigration of souls) as a process for spiritual purification and fulfillment. Passages in the Gospels, such as the disciples questioning Jesus about the man born blind ("Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" - John 9:2) or Jesus identifying John the Baptist with the spirit of Elijah (Matthew 11:14, 17:10-13), are seen by Spiritism as indicative of an underlying understanding of pre-existence and spiritual return.
  • Spirit Communication: The Bible itself contains numerous instances of communication between the physical and spiritual realms. Prophets in the Old Testament received messages from God, often mediated by angels (spirits). The New Testament describes the gifts of the Spirit, including prophecy and the discerning of spirits (1 Corinthians 12 and 14). The Transfiguration of Jesus, where he conversed with Moses and Elijah (Matthew 17:1-3), is a powerful example of communication with spirits who had long departed the physical world. Apparitions of saints, recognized within Catholic tradition, also represent a form of communication between the spiritual and material worlds, where spirits (saints) manifest to offer guidance or messages. Spiritism, therefore, sees its understanding of mediumship not as an innovation, but as a systematized and understood faculty that has always been part of human experience, now explained under the light of the Spiritist Doctrine for moral and spiritual advancement.

It is important to clarify that while the Old Testament contains warnings against certain forms of spirit consultation (e.g., necromancy for frivolous or malevolent purposes, which Spiritism also condemns), it does not negate the reality of divinely sanctioned spirit communication. Spiritism emphasizes responsible, ethical, and Christian-based communication for enlightenment and solace, always under the aegis of God's permission and for the good of humanity.

In essence, Spiritism provides a comprehensive framework that integrates Jesus's moral teachings with an deeper understanding of the soul's ongoing journey and the natural reality of the spiritual world. It does not seek to replace or diminish traditional Christianity but to unveil its deepest truths, offering a key to understanding the divine laws in a manner that is both rational and profoundly spiritual, thereby acting as a vital and relevant Christian denomination for the modern world.
